The mission of The Screenwriters Colony is to support emerging screenwriters. 2010 marks the ninth year of our Writers-in-Residence Program. Every year during the month of October, four writers, selected from a pool of industry-nominated candidates, live and work together at picturesque Almanack Farm, perched on the edge of Nantucket’s cranberry bog conservation land. The Colonists are granted ample time to generate and refine their projects and share work amongst themselves. To ensure a comfortable and inspiring work environment they are provided with a chef, a Colony car, bicycles, workspace, Wi-Fi, a printer and unlimited movie rentals. Two industry Mentors are brought up each weekend throughout the month to workshop each of the writers’ screenplays. In addition to intensive one-on-one feedback sessions, writers and Mentors enjoy an informal and sociable Colony experience over dinners and other island outings.
Mentors are drawn from screenwriters, directors, producers and creative executives from both the independent scene and Hollywood establishment. Recent mentors to attend the Colony include: Whit Stilman (writer/director METROPOLITAN, BARCELONA); Patty Jenkins (writer/director MONSTER); Campbell Scott (actor/director/screenwriter SINGLES, BIG NIGHT, ROGER DODGER); Oren Moverman (screenwriter JESUS’S SON, Todd Haynes’ I’M NOT THERE); Dan Harris (writer/director IMAGINARY HEROS, screenwriter SUPERMAN RETURNS, X-MEN); Bingham Ray (founder October Films, ex-president United Artists); J.V. Hart (screenwriter Coppola’s DRACULA, CONTACT, SAHARA); Jeb Brody (Big Beach/Producer EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE); Peter Sollett & Eva Vives (writer/director & co-writer RAISING VICTOR VARGAS); and Coleman Hough (screenwriter Soderbergh’s FULL FRONTAL & BUBBLE).
