ANNUAL NANTUCKET FILM FESTIVAL - JUNE 14-18
A LUNCHTIME PANEL PRESENTED BY SCREENWRITERS COLONY
A FILM IS WRITTEN THREE TIMES
This bit of conventional cinematic wisdom underscores the collaborative
nature of filmmaking. It illuminates the notion that a movie is
written first in screenplay form by the writer, a second time
on set by the director’s choices in every shot, and finally,
“written” a third time in the editing room, under
the eye of an editor, with in his every cut and arrangement of
shots. This evolution from script to screen can be composed of
minor, almost imperceptible adjustments, or be so radical and
dramatic that the final film ends up wildly different from the
original script. The results can be seen as successful or catastrophic,
depending on the process, the players and your perspective.
